As a Craftsman (Electric/Gas/Water) in our Facilities department, you will utilize your prior experience to perform skilled crafts duties throughout the park with little or no supervision, ensuring services provided meet section standards, clients’ specifications, applicable codes and standards and program goals and is aesthetically pleasing to visitors. This includes routine craftsman tasks, as well as those associated with preventative maintenance, special repair projects, capital construction, special events, emergency/safety, unanticipated special repairs, unanticipated capital projects and overhead while working cooperatively with peers, managers, and clients as well as establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with clients. Utilizing your focus on safety and quality, you will participate in the execution of routine maintenance and/or repair projects: (a) as assigned perform routine inspections of exhibits and facilities and advise Manager of needed repairs and clients requests; (b) advise staff of resource needs, evaluate the schedule and communicate pertinent information to all affected parties; (c) ensure projects take place with least amount of encroachment upon guests and animal collection; and, (d) ensure work being performed meets specified quality control standards. Drawing upon your results orientation, you will perform tasks associated with the sections’ Special Events Operating Program including performing skilled craft duties, providing estimates, and communicating all pertinent information to Managers and other concerned parties. Making use of your knowledge and experience, you will also carry out craftsman tasks associated with the section’s functional programs as assigned: (a) routinely inspect functional, structural and aesthetic systems in exhibits and facilities and perform minor repairs and maintenance; (b) perform crafts work up to specified quality standards; (c) advise of material needs; and, (d) carry out tasks associated with the section’s standard operating procedures which include, but are not limited to, equipment and shop maintenance, safety, inventory and purchasing, facility surveys, and utility locations. You will also be responsible for providing the Manager resource needs for budget development, assist in controlling the operating budget, provide facility and exhibit survey data, perform duties associated with the section’s overhead operating program, and other duties as assigned.

As Brookfield Zoo is open 365 days per year, this position may require the ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed. The hourly rate for this union position is $24.63/hr.

The requirements for this position include:

Minimum High School diploma or equivalent.

Graduate of an accredited apprenticeship program, two years experience at a journeyman level, an Associates degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of training and experience required.

Must have knowledge and experience in scheduling, estimating, purchasing, and project management.

Ability to perform all traditional tasks related to field. Must possess skills in related fields. Familiarity with all codes related to field.

Ability to read, write and perform all required math commensurate with field of responsibility.

Good communications and interpersonal skills; proactive, persistent and helpful. Team player.

Valid Illinois driver’s license required for Illinois residents within 30 days of hire. Valid license from state of residence for non-Illinois residents and be able to qualify for additional vehicle operation certification.

Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience. Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
