Curator Manager - Live Exhibits

Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to eleven (11) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as Exhibits Technician, Aquarist, Assistant Curator, or Curator.

Duties Responsible for overseeing the budget (capital improvement and operating), staffing, records management, husbandry operations, emergency operations, and strategic planning for the Aquarium's live exhibits and animal collections, including the areas of Collections Management, Animal Husbandry, Horticulture, and Live Exhibit Operations. Responsible for division of 31 full-time employees.

Collections Management: responsible for managing daily recording and maintenance of animal records information; developing collection plans for live animal exhibits and programs; managing the acquisition/disposition process for animal collections (primarily mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and invertebrates), both in permanent and temporary exhibits; ensuring files related to animal transactions are accurately maintained; managing federal, state, local and international permits necessary for the acquisition/disposition, maintenance and transport of wildlife in accordance with established regulations; ensuring data for animal records are maintained in accordance with established professional standards, including the Zoological Information Management System; and establishing emergency operations procedures for animal collections and ensuring protocols are implemented, practiced, and followed to provide for animal welfare and safety.

Animal Husbandry: responsible for managing the animal husbandry and health maintenance of live animal collections (primarily mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and invertebrates); overseeing acquisitions/dispositions for live exhibits and animal habitats; overseeing food selection/purchasing and nutritional analysis for animal collections; overseeing behavioral management, interactive programs and enrichment activities to ensure animal welfare and safety for animal collections, staff and guests; supervising the Veterinary Technician position to ensure optimal health and welfare of animal collections, including working with veterinary staff to implement medical care plans; and managing on-site laboratory/pharmacy operations and off-site contractual diagnostic services.

Horticulture: responsible for managing all horticulture activities associated with plants in exhibits and elsewhere on Aquarium campus, including along the nature trail/path and in other managed gardens; and overseeing greenhouse and nursery operations for propagation of native plants.

Live Exhibit Operations: responsible for managing the division's operating and capital budgets; long-term planning for all live exhibit areas; overseeing the planning, development, design and construction of live exhibits; managing ongoing maintenance and repair/replacement programs for live exhibits, habitats and support areas; and coordinating planning, design, acquisition, construction, installation, operation and removal of all temporary exhibits.

Preferences The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's of Science degree in a related field; a Master's of Science degree in a related field is preferred. Additional preferred qualifications include the following. Managerial experience at a senior curator level. Experience handling capital and operating budgets. Experience creating strategic plans for an institution's live exhibits; and creating, designing and developing new and temporary exhibits. Animal collections experience, planning, maintaining, and supporting live mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, and invertebrates. Experience in an Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) or Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums (AMMPA) accredited zoological, aquarium or museum setting.
