This is a Temporary, Full Time internship. The period of time for the Temporary position is June 8 through Spetember 2, 2013. The right candidate will be available to work full time through these dates.

The goal of this internship is to learn and successfully perform (under supervision) the duties and responsibilities of a Zoo employee in the Children's Zoo and Insect Zoo. Experience will include:

leading the public education programs which will include: Livestock Stampede, Hatchery Tour, Life on the Farm, Incredible Insects in Action, Amazing Wetland Animals, Meerkat Talk, Pond Frenzy.

coordinating the section's involvement with the Talk on the Wild Side youth interpreters

overseeing management of the volunteer programs: recruitment, orientation, work scheduling, training, daily supervision. (volunteers provide over 14,000 hours a year of support in Special Collections)

assisting keeper staff with animal care husbandry, diet and veterinary care of the large and diverse animal collection within the Children's Zoo and Insect Zoo

assisting facility maintenance and exhibit renovation

assisting with facility horticulture

using intern training and experience to design special projects (interns, for example, have developed a new interpretive program for Nature Trail, re-wrote several handouts for guests and the self-guided tour booklet for teachers, developed in the Insect Zoo a stenciled art mural for the main display room as well as a new invertebrate interpretive program for use outside at the wetlands)

assisting staff with animal enrichment and training programs

supporting facility management and administration

Qualifications: College level coursework in biology, zoology, ecology, or related area; ability to present information to groups; and career interest working with animals. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Salary: $10.55/hour
