The City of Idaho Falls is currently accepting applications for the position of Zoo Education Programs Summer Instructor. This seasonal position assists the Curator of Education in the operations of the Tautphaus Park Zoo summer EdZoocation programs/classes, special events, and other education activities.

This is a seasonal position that is expected to work 25-40 hours per week from approximately mid-May through late-August 2013.

Essential Functions:

Assists the Curator of Education in developing, coordinating, instructing, and implementing education programs, events, and activities including classes and camps, overnight safaris, youth volunteer programs, behind the scenes tours and special events. Also assists with inventory and maintenance of educational program supplies and aides Curator of Education in the maintenance of zoo graphics.

Will help with the implementation of the Animal Encounters Show, working with a variety of animals, wild and domestic. Position will be required to handle a wide variety of small and medium sized animals including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

Education and Experience:

Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an ability or aptitude to perform the above and related duties. Current college level enrollment in biology and/or an education field of study is strongly encouraged. A college degree in biology and/or an education field is preferred.

Previous public speaking and/or teaching experience to a variety of groups ranging in all sizes and age levels is a plus. Experience in an informal education setting is preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Some knowledge of developing and presenting public education programs such as those in zoos and nature centers.

Knowledge of conservation, natural history, biology or zoology. Knowledge of principles and understanding of the process of learning and teaching.

Ability to operate a computer and associated word processing and spreadsheet programs. Experience in graphic design a plus.

Ability to understand and follow routine verbal or written instruction; ability to learn quickly and adapt to unique requirements of the position; ability to develop effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, the public and volunteers.

Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with a diverse audience including, but not limited to, fellow employees, visitors and children of diverse ages.

Special Qualifications:

Must be able to work evenings, weekends, overnight and holidays. Must be flexible with schedule.

City will provide uniform shirts and nametags. Employee must provide own uniform pants and/or shorts.
