Keeper-Butterfly and Insect

Under the general supervision of the Butterfly/Insect Supervisor the butterfly/insect keeper will be responsible for the daily care and management of all species located in the Butterfly/Insect USDA APHIS Facility to include insects, amphibians and horticulture.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Daily husbandry of insects and amphibians, animal enrichment, observations, record keeping and routine animal medications, horticultural and house keeping duties.

Must maintain all Plant Health-Plant Protection and Quarantine standards at all times.

Maintain the functions of USDA APHIS Facility including some life support systems.

Work with interns, volunteers and student shadows.

All other duties not listed as deemed necessary by area supervisor.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required:

Require strong communication and organizational skills including attention to detail

Knowledge of a safe working environment for animal collection, employees and visitors.

Ability to work within strict guidelines and PPQ standards.

Ability to work independently and as a team.

Must possess interest in butterflies, amphibians and horticulture and have some working knowledge.

Ability to speak publicly to large and small groups.

Working conditions and physical effort:

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must have High School Diploma or GED.

Prefer college degree or 3 years experience in related field.

Must possess a valid driver’s license

A current Tuberculosis test is required prior to being hired.

Work is normally performed with some physical effort.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Must be able to work within guidelines set by the USDA for APHIS Facilities.

Weekend and Holiday work may be required.
