Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is seeking applicants for a full-time animal keeper to join our Encounter Africa team. Encounter Africa is a 13.5 million dollar expansion project at CMZ which includes a newly constructed pachyderm barn & African Lion building and new exhibits for elephants, black rhino, lions and meerkats. Primary animals under this keeper’s care will include 0.4 African elephants and black rhino. The program manages the elephants in a restricted contact system. Knowledge and a strong skill set in operant condition training techniques are a must. The successful applicant will provide the highest quality care and husbandry for the animals to which they are assigned.
Duties include but are not limited to operant conditioning training, environmental enrichment, providing Defining Moments and exemplary guest service experiences, cleaning/maintaining exhibits and enclosures, assisting with veterinary procedures, recording animal observations and daily reports.
Qualifications: Basic knowledge of natural history, animal behavior and husbandry for the species under their care. Ability to lift 70 pounds and complete duties in all weather conditions. A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant biological field and a minimum of one year paid experience in an AZA accredited facility. Experience training animals utilizing operant conditioning/positive reinforcement is preferred.

Salary range $21,756.80 - $25,854.40 DOE
