Principal Summary: The Education Manager assists the Director of Education in the management of the education department. This position is the primary supervisor for our youth mentoring program, Zoo Crew, with over 300 members. This position is responsible for recruiting Zoo Crew members, training, and mentoring the members of the ZC program. The Education Manager also oversees all education program animals and the staff that manages those areas on a daily basis.
•Recruit, train, support, and supervise Zoo Crew volunteers and all aspects of the Zoo Crew Program
•Maintain data base for education programs.
•Weekend Zoo supervisor: responsible for opening, closing, and to ensure successful operations during the day
•Responsible for overseeing the husbandry and overall animal care for the entire program animal collections. This includes birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, arthropods, aquatics, and amphibians
•Assist with the coordination and facilitation of the Overnight Adventure Program
•Coordinate the Our Zoo to You Program in schools and retirement communities
•Program Support: create and facilitate education programs as needed
•Represents the Zoo during outreach programs as needed
•Train adult volunteers to work in education areas as needed
•Lead education tours for schools and groups through the Zoo
•Responsible for the supervision of staff and volunteers in the following areas: Critter Outpost, Hive, Butterfly Pavilion, and Nature Swap
•Other duties as assigned
Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Primary work outside during the open season. Lifting and carrying up to, but not to exceed 50 pounds.
•Experienced supervisory skills
•Must have exceptional customer service skills
•Required weekend hours while the Zoo is open
•Must be willing to work directly with all of the Zoo’s Education Program animals
•Valid Drivers License and proof of insurability
•Demonstrated ability to work independently with little supervision
•Ability to write and speak in an educated manner
•Knowledge of area resources, general science, environmental science or related fields
•Experience supervising youth
Work schedule varies and will include weekend, evening and holiday work. This department supports other special events when requested. Occasional errands outside the Zoo are required.
The salary range for this position is $25,000 - $29,000.
