Organization: Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium
Location: Sarasota, FL, United States
Job or Internship: Internship
Every year Mote Marine Laboratory reaches more than 500 students during its summer programs, inspiring a new generation of marine scientists and enthusiasts. The Digi-Know Summer Camps are offered for students ages 11-14. This program allows middle-school campers to create digital media projects using easy-to-use computer applications and equipment to create digital media projects. Most camps run one week for four hours a day, plus Morning Camp Care on select weeks. Mote's summer interns play a critical role in delivering these programs. The internship is an intensive 12-14 week commitment, beginning in late May. Most work weeks run Monday - Friday on a 9:00am - 5:30pm schedule, with some weekend or evening work. Interns in this program assist staff with student instruction using Apple Macbook hardware and software. Interns will also work in the Digi-Know Cool classroom, throughout the Aquarium and Mammal Center, and occasionally outdoors. Duties include, but are not limited to, developing, teaching, and evaluating marine science and digital media activities; supervising/conducting camp activities; cleaning and organizing education spaces; daily set-up and break down of camp activities; and overseeing Morning Camp Care.
Potential Interns should express an interest in science education and have a background in multimedia. Interns should be pursuing a degree in education or (marine) science, have strong communication skills, and enjoy working with children. CPR and First Aid certifications are required. All interns must pass a background screening to work with students. Though teaching experience is a plus, it is not required. All Interns will receive intensive and thorough training in marine science topics, Apple hardware and software, education pedagogy, and the work of Mote Marine Laboratory. Mote Education Summer Interns will become more comfortable and confident teachers/presenters, gain curriculum development experience, and make valuable professional contacts for future scientific and/or educational endeavors. Interns may have some limited opportunities to shadow or visit with Mote research and/or aquarium staff.
This internship is available from the end of May through August. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9-5:30.
