The Natural Science Center of Greensboro, an AZA and AAM accredited facility, is currently recruiting for the newly created full time position of Aquarist I. This is an entry level aquarist position that will report directly to the SciQuarium Curator and Aquarist II. The SciQuarium is a new facility slated for completion in March, 2013 and opening in June. SciQuarium exhibits include Amazon, penguins, stingrays, and a 90,000 gallon open ocean tank.

The Aquarist I will be help care for a diverse collection of fishes including multiple species of sharks and rays, as well as Amazonian and Caribbean fish. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: LSS maintenance, assisting with quarantine, water quality testing, diet preparation, maintenance and education diving, record keeping, exhibit cleaning, and salt water production.

The minimum education requirement for this position is an associate degree in marine biology/animal husbandry, or a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Either must be from an accredited program. Candidates should have a minimum of one year aquarium experience (preferably in an AZA accredited facility), and be well-versed in the particulars of fish husbandry. Candidates must be willing to work weekends and holidays. Must be SCUBA certified and also hold a valid driver’s license. Must be able to work in hot and humid environments, and lift at least 50 lbs. The successful candidate should have basic understanding of plumbing and LSS systems, be able to diagnose common fish diseases, and some experience starting up small aquarium systems. Compensation will be dependent upon experience and will include a full benefit package including medical and dental insurance, retirement, paid holidays, and annual leave.
