Zookeeper – Herps/Aquatics

Qualifications Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Environmental Resources, Wildlife Management or a related field and at least six months of exotic animal experience. Will substitute training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities. Generally, one year of full time exotic animal experience will translate to one year of college. Must have a valid drivers’ license and be insurable by the insurance carrier. Must be able to provide a negative TB test prior to hire date. Aquarium experience preferred.

Position Summary

Under supervision of Curator and Zoological Supervisor, this position is responsible for the daily care, maintenance and observation of assigned animal collection and associated facilities within the Herpetology/Aquatics department. Daily cleaning of animal exhibits, service areas and holding units along with diet preparation, feeding and restocking of feed supplies as needed and as prescribed. Any other related responsibilities as necessary to accomplish department objectives in keeping with the mission and values of Tulsa Zoo Management.

Working Conditions

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Frequent standing, walking, bending, balancing, twisting, climbing, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, carrying, lifting, reaching motions. Lifting/pulling/exerting up to 50 lbs. Must be physically able and willing to operate a variety of equipment which may include computer, telephone, radio, vehicles, hand tools, small electric tools, animal restraint and capture devices, etc

DISCOMFORT/RISKS: Indoor and outdoor environment. Exposure to extreme cold and heat, inclement weather, chemicals, and dust/airborne materials. Works with potentially dangerous animals (i.e. venomous animals).

HOLIDAY WORK: Evening, holiday, weekend work required.

TRAVEL: Occasional conference and workshop attendance available. If funding available some or all expenses paid.
