The Toledo Zoo is seeking a qualified applicant to join our Animal Health & Nutrition Department in the position of veterinary intern. The applicant will be part of an established animal health department consisting of a chief veterinarian, an associate veterinarian, a rotating zoological medicine resident, two veterinary technicians, a part-time veterinary technician assistant, a part time administrative assistant, three commissary stewards, and a part time hospital keeper. The institution carries a diverse collection of over 9,000 animals representing over 800 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates.
This program focuses on training in all aspects of the medical and surgical care of zoo animals, including diagnosis, treatment, surgery, preventative medicine, parasitology, radiology, nutrition, anesthesiology, pathology, record keeping, and staff communication regarding zoological cases. The intern will be required to prepare at least one manuscript for publication and will be encouraged to present at a scientific meeting.
This internship can be a two-year position with the second year contingent upon successful completion of the first. Successful completion of the internship is intended to improve clinical competency and facilitate entry into zoological medicine residency and post DVM graduate programs or clinical positions in a zoological institution.
Minimum Qualifications: 1) a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited institution and; 2) an Ohio veterinary license (licensure expense is the responsibility of the intern and must be obtained before duties of the position can be assumed). Preference will be given to applicants with at least one year of clinical experience. Prior experience with exotics is highly desirable. The candidate must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and be willing to work closely with the animal management staff (curators, associate curators, and lead keepers).
Salary & Benefits: Annual salary will be $23,000 plus a benefits package including medical, dental & vision coverage and paid time off (vacation, holiday and sick leave). Short term housing is available at the start of the program. Some funds for travel to a national conference are available.
