Fresno Chaffee Zoo is a dynamic organization, continually seeking to provide excellent animal care, an excellent customer experience and an excellent place to work. The zoo is a fast-paced organization with multiple new and expanding exhibits.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo is seeking to hire a knowledgeable, outgoing and customer-oriented Zookeeper Assistant. The successful candidate must be comfortable working with the public. This position must maintain enthusiastic interaction with all guests, conduct engaging presentations about the animals and provide excellent service to customers of all ages. The Zoo employees’ positive interactions with customers create the unforgettable customer experience that keeps patrons coming back.


Zookeeper Assistant will provide journeyman-level daily care of the Zoo’s animals in a zoological setting. Under general supervision of staff, the responsibilities and duties of the Zookeeper Assistants include, but are not necessarily limited to, the maintenance and observation for the health, feeding and care of a variety of zoo animals; record keeping; assisting in the movement of animals as directed; assisting in public presentations; interacting with zoo docents; excellence in guest relations skills. Also responsible for driving zoo vehicles to pick up supplies and materials as assigned.

Minimum Qualification:

Good physical condition: ability to lift a minimum for 50 lbs. (i.e. feed sack) and move a minimum of 100 lbs. (i.e. hay bale). Twelve units of accredited college or university level course work in animal science, zoology, biology, wildlife management, or related field work may be substituted for six (6) months experience.

One year’s experience in the care, handling and feeding of animals in a zoological setting is preferred. Good written and verbal communications skills. Must be able to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Must have a valid California driver’s license and good driving record. This is a part-time/special projects position (approximately 30 hours a week) $9.00/hour without benefits.
