Responsible for supporting aquatic animal-related research, including studies with water chemistry dynamics, invertebrates, fish, and sea turtles. Responsibilities will include study design, manufacture of research tools and systems, husbandry care of research animals, ordering supplies for research-related activities, data collection, and scientific interpretation/presentation of results to the scientific community and to the park’s guests. Individual will work in partnership with Water Sciences and Aquarium Husbandry personnel. Contract Term: 1 year (including a 6-month probation period), renewable for a second year.Major Duties and Responsibilities:• First year’s expectationso Point of contact on daily husbandry of research animalso Manufacture of research tools and systems, ordering supplies for research-related activitieso Data collectiono Develop and implement innovative ways to share research results with guests and popular audience; weekly presentations to guests• Conditional Second year’s expectations would focus on the followingo Conduct and analyze research projects as directed by Research Manager to support the animal collection; focus will be in water chemistry dynamics as they relate to fish health; provide weekly summaries o Communicate research results at quarterly staff seminars and conferences as well as in scientific journals and popular publications (at least one publication per year)• Secondary Responsibilities: must demonstrate interest and capability to help support fish and marine mammal husbandry/behavioral/cognition studiesQualifications:• Masters Level Thesis in chemistry or biology-related field desired• Experienced in experimental design as well as parametric and non-parametric statistics• Knowledgeable in the biology and husbandry of aquatic organisms• Knowledgeable in the field of water chemistry dynamics• Excellent oral and written communication skills• Ability to work with others in a team-oriented atmosphere• Demonstrated abilities to initiate, develop, and complete scientific research projects• Familiarity with computer programs, such as Access, SPSS, EXCEL, and Adobe PhotoshopDesired Qualifications:• Zoo and/or aquarium experience • Experience in education programming, education of general public, and children• History of active engagement within academic, conservation, and/or zoo/aquarium communitiesTypical Physical Demands:Engage in fairly vigorous physical activity most of the day (i.e. traveling throughout the aquarium collecting research-related samples). Overall must be in good physical condition and be able to lift 50 pounds.
