LEAD MARINE EDUCATION INTERPRETER
POINT DEFIANCE ZOO AND AQUARIUM
CLOSING DATE: December 7, 2012
SALARY: $9.83 - $11.16 per hour
HOURS: Shift hours will typically fall between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Shifts will be 5-7 hours long, 3-4 days per week (15 – 30 hours per week). Position requires weekends and holidays.

CLASSIFICATION: This position is classified as a part-time/seasonal position and is not eligible for health benefits or paid leave. Enrollment in the WA state retirement system may be mandatory. This position is an at-will position with no written or implied contractual agreement.
The goal of PDZA’s Education Department is to connect guests with animals and their habitats and to increase understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Interpreters will be responsible for delivering highly engaging interactive activities to guests throughout zoo and aquarium grounds. Duties include initiating interactions with zoo and aquarium guests through informal interpretive chats, focused activities, and scheduled presentations in a variety of exhibit settings, both in and outdoors. An active schedule is maintained throughout the day including standing for several hours in the sun and/or rain. The Marine Education Interpreter will be responsible for coordination of the Marine Discovery Center including programming, activities and day-to-day operations of the center. Curriculum in the center focuses on touch tank experiences for visitors, Puget Sound watersheds, sustainable seafood choices, and NatureMapping for Beaches. The Marine Education Interpreter will coordinate five guided beach walks for community members and will assist in administering the NatureMapping for Beaches protocol. They will also serve as a staff liaison for education youth volunteers in the Marine Discovery Center. Interpreters will also be responsible for other duties as needed, including assisting with events on grounds and basic administrative and/or clerical duties.
Education in the natural sciences, education, or related field or equivalent experience.
Experience working with children required.
Experience working in an educational setting required. Experience working in marine education preferred.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage the public.
Customer service oriented.
Desire to work with large groups of children and adults.
Positive, cheerful and professional attitude.
Organized with ability to multitask and follow-up on requests.
Ability to work outdoors, in a variety of weather conditions and be on your feet for long shifts.
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
