Program Animal Specialist – Heritage Farm
The Buffalo Zoo is seeking a full-time person to primarily care for the animals and elements of the Delta Sonic Heritage Farm, an interactive exhibit resembling a farm along the Erie Canal in the mid 1800’s.
Minimum four year degree in zoo/animal-related science or two-year degree plus equivalent experience; a minimum of one year paid experience as a domestic animal keeper in an AZA Zoo, ALHFAM member farm, or approved equivalent; proven successful experience in all phases of the husbandry and management of large domestic and small exotic animals is required; experience and proven success in the training of domestic (particularly equine) and exotic mammals and birds for visitor contact, demonstrations and programs; natural horsemanship experience a plus; public speaking/teaching experience to diverse audiences or equivalent experience; applicant must be comfortable in visitor contact venues.
Experience with physical restraint equipment and practices, vehicles and related maintenance equipment; ability to operate vehicles such as van, dump truck, pickup truck and front loader when needed; Applicants must show proficiency in use of all cleaning and husbandry equipment and supplies; experience in the use and maintenance of domestic animal work and lead equipment; experience with raptor demonstration and control equipment a plus.
Must have solid written and verbal communication skills. Must have valid NYS driver’s license, and must have an average or better driving record based on the evaluation process of our insurance company.
