Riverbanks Zoo & Garden is currently recruiting an experienced Bird Curator to provide leadership and support to Riverbanks’ bird department and diverse bird collection. Riverbanks’ curators work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment that promotes our mission – to foster an appreciation and concern for all living things – through excellent husbandry, medical, and collection management practices. Riverbanks is known for its successful bird breeding programs and its active involvement in AZA.

Duties: Under limited supervision plans, directs and oversees the activities of the department to ensure and promote effective and efficient care of the department's animal collection. Is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the proper care and treatment of the department's animal life including the preparation and administration of diets; medical care; design, development and maintenance of animal exhibits; maintenance of exhibit and building equipment and mechanical systems; maintenance of complete and accurate animal records, etc. Is responsible for the acquisition and disposition of specimens, planning and implementing various projects, and overall management of departmental staff and finances.

Initiates and oversees viable managed breeding, husbandry and conservation programs for species in the department's collection in cooperation with relevant American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) Conservation and Science (C&S) committees. Promotes public education relative to Zoo programs, husbandry, animal conservation, etc., through lectures, tours, student interviews, media appearances and communication with individual members of the public. Writes both popular articles and peer-review technical articles for appropriate professional and popular publications.

Works closely with two senior keepers and a great team of bird keepers. Demonstrates great communication and leadership in all areas of department management, staff development, and inter-departmental collaboration.

Reports to the Director of Animal Collections and Conservation.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree required (in one of the Biological Sciences preferred) with three to five years of experience as an animal keeper coupled with one to two years of supervisory experience in an AZA accredited institution; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a broad range of experience managing bird collections in a professional setting. Must demonstrate excellent communication and management skills.
