The Natural Science Center of Greensboro (NSC) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the leadership role of Curator - SciQuarium (Curator- SciQ) beginning July 1, 2012. The NSC is North Carolina’s only dually AZA and AAM accredited institution. The Center’s 12-acre, AZA accredited Animal Discovery Zoological Park is complemented by a 68,000 square-foot AAM accredited science museum. A 23,000 square-foot hybrid museum-aquarium complex, Carolina SciQuarium, is slated to open in the spring of 2013. SciQuarium will be NC’s only center-of-state aquarium. Designed by NSC employees and Cambridge Seven/MMPA, the SciQuarium will combine unique, water-dependent species/exhibits with “SciPods” of interactive learning. Phase-one exhibits include: fishing cat, Asian small-clawed otter, African penguin, Amazon River and forest, large stingray/shark touch tank, 100,000 gallon shark/reef tank and “SciPod” themes focused on adaptation, water quality, husbandry and aquatic veterinary care. Future exhibits to be designed and led by this position include: jellyfish, coral reef and numerous small species systems to compliment larger themed habitats. In addition, approximately 50% of the SciQuarium’s behind-the-scenes work space will be accessible to visitors by paid and prearranged tour.

Curator – SciQ will be the first new position hired for the SciQuarium project. At the time of hire, building/exhibit construction will be approximately 50% complete. During construction, this position will help hire and oversee a small but dedicated SciQ team consisting of full and part-time aquarists/keepers. This is a “working” and hands-on curatorial position. Core knowledge and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: comprehensive understanding and operation of all exhibits and corresponding LSS, a strong and applied understanding of fish/invertebrate husbandry, comprehensive understanding water chemistry/analysis, purchase and set-up of all back-of-house fish holding and quarantine systems, species acquisition/acclimation, comprehensive management of staff, assurance of AZA standards/practices, record-keeping for SciQ species/systems/LSS, oversight of staff and docent scheduling, enrichment program coordination/cooperation, contract veterinary services management, conservation initiatives, limited research, exhibit development/modifications, professional development for staff, work closely with in-house AS degree program in Zoo and Aquarium Science, departmental budget management, vigilance over all animal-based safety and security, lead and organize NSC dive team and protocols, leadership in animal department educational programming and docent training. Core leadership attributes must include: team player, strong verbal and written communication skills, work cooperatively with all departments, promotes animal department and visitor interaction, visionary, dependable, consistent, leads by example, comprehensive understanding of AZA standards, and involvement in AZA programs.

The position will begin July 1, 2012. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and range between $32,500 and $45,000. A minimum of a BS degree and three years of experience in a leadership role at an AZA institution is strongly preferred. Position includes an excellent benefit plan valued in excess of $10,000 paid by employer. A NC driver’s license will be required within 3 months of starting date.
