Oakland Zoo Set to Help Rehabilitate Endangered California Condors

Beginning in fall 2012, Oakland Zoo is linking up with the California Condor Recovery Program to help rehabilitate sick or injured condors. Within recent months, a holding facility was constructed on Zoo grounds and Veterinary staff members were trained in proper procedures for treating lead poisoned birds. This new partnership is significant because ill birds found in Big Sur or Pinnacles National Park can now be transported to a wildlife hospital that is much closer in proximity. Prior to the new partnership, the nearest Veterinary hospital for condor care was the Los Angeles Zoo, which is also a participant of the Condor Recovery Program.

The team was searching for the endangered Atelopus limosus harlequin frog, and collected one female, two males, and a juvenile (sex to be determined). Despite the continuing weak economy, and 20 days when temperatures reached 90 degrees or higher, the Zoo saw only a 2 percent decrease in attendance from 2009, with 1,130,518 total visitors.

The future is looking a little bit brighter for one of America's most endangered frogs. A recent collaboration between the Memphis Zoo and Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo has resulted in the largest number of dusky gopher frog tadpoles ever bred in captivity. Over 1,400 tadpoles hatched earlier this month after researchers carried out an in vitro fertilization (IVF) for the critically endangered species.

As eggs, they were rescued from the perils that have all but decimated their population. As tadpoles, they hatched under the watchful eyes of zookeepers. Now, hundreds of Oregon spotted frogs (Rana pretiosa) have developed their land legs and taken a big leap back into the wild, where conservationists hope they will have a fighting chance. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife released more than 1,300 frogs into the wild this week, including more than 230 that had been reared at the Oregon Zoo.
