Palm Beach Zoo is seeking a lead keeper to assist with the direct care of a diverse collection of mammals (including Class I carnivores) and birds (including waterfowl, parrots and cranes). The lead keeper will rotate through assigned sections to provide and oversee husbandry, monitor the health of the collection and oversee upkeep of enclosures. In addition to performing keeper tasks (such as feeding, cleaning, enrichment, animal training, observations, record keeping and capture/restraint), the lead keeper will provide mentorship, direction and coordination of keeper staff and responsibilities. This position also serves as the coordinator of animal care activities in the absence of supervisors and serves as the coordinator of the emergency response team on a rotating basis.Animal Keepers at Palm Beach Zoo engage visitors on a daily basis through formal and informal animal encounters. Palm Beach Zoo is seeking applicants that have a passion for conservation and a desire to engage and educate the public on conservation initiatives. The successful candidate will serve as a mentor to volunteers, interns and other staff in areas of husbandry and propagation, conservation and guest engagement. Applicants should possess excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, display a positive attitude, enjoy working on a team and have proficiency using Microsoft Office programs. Qualifications:A Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences or a related field and a minimum of four years of experience in an AZA accredited facility is required, as well as experience with species in the zoo’s collection (jaguar, anteater, bear, panther, otter, ungulates, tapir, capybara, cavy, bush dogs, primates, birds). One year of supervisory experience and previous publications or presentations in a zoo-related medium are preferred. Must be physically able to stoop, bend, reach, climb, lift, carry or push at least 50 pounds in a south Florida climate. Must be able to work a schedule which will include weekends, holidays and special events.
