Along with daily husbandry, responsibilities may include enrichment, diet preparation, monitoring animal behavior, record keeping, and pen design and maintenance. Additionally, interns may have the opportunity to observe veterinary procedures as they relate to general animal care and learn about assisted reproduction technology developed by our scientific staff.

Job Title Exotic Animal Intern (Unpaid)
Location Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species/Freeport McMoran Audubon Species Survival Center (ACRES/FMASSC), New Orleans, LA

Time Commitment 12 Weeks: Work week is 5 days a week (40 hours/week)
Summary of Position:
Candidates will gain valuable hands-on experience working with a variety of exotic and endangered animal species including antelope, small and large cats, and two species of storks. Along with daily husbandry, responsibilities may include enrichment, diet preparation, monitoring animal behavior, record keeping, and enclosure design and maintenance. Additionally, interns may have the opportunity to observe veterinary procedures as they relate to general animal care and learn about assisted reproduction technology developed by our scientific staff. Interns also may be asked to assist in other animal departments (domestic cats or cranes) as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Daily husbandry duties include:
Diet preparation
Feeding
Cleaning enclosures (racking, sweeping, mopping, hosing etc..)
Behavioral observations
Facility maintenance (fence repair, mowing, weed eating, painting, etc..)
Preparation and administering of enrichment items
Assist staff with veterinary procedures when required
Requirements:
Strong interest in animal care, husbandry and conservation.
Ability to accurately follow directions
Good attitude
Ability to work alone or as part of a team.
Ability to work outdoors in physically demanding adverse conditions. (Heat, humidity, rain, mosquitoes, poison ivy etc.)
