Behavior Research / Hoofstock Intern

Organization: Fossil Rim Wildlife Center (AZA Member)
Location: Glen Rose, TX, United States
Job or Internship: Internship

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center (FRWC) offers an internship for an upper-level undergraduate student or recent-graduate interested in integrating research and husbandry skills (university course credits available upon request). Although details may be negotiable, the timing is spring/summer (March 1-August 15, 2013) and/or fall (September 2 -December 15, 2013). Training is provided for the intern to assist in collecting, archiving and analyzing videos for behavioral assays of the bull-switching treatment for sustainable herd management of African bovids (http://www.conservationcenters.org/conservation-research/creating-sustainable-herds/). In addition to research, the intern will be responsible for routine animal husbandry as needed due to flexible staff scheduling: e.g. cleaning, feeding, construction/maintenance, and assistance during veterinary procedures. In collaboration with the FRWC research team, the intern is encouraged to design a relevant independent research project. On-site housing and a $300/month stipend are provided.

A cover letter should address the candidate's career goals, experience and demonstrated performance regarding: (1) ability to work within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, (2) ability to work independently after training, (3) attention to details in recording observations and managing data, (4) experience working with large hoofstock (domestic or non-domestic), (5) flexibility with irregular timing and changing plans, (6) physical endurance with heavy lifting under adverse weather conditions, (7) experience driving farm trucks and/or stick-shift vehicles, (8) patience during routine behavioral observations and data-entry procedures, and (9) willingness to work at a computer as well as out-of doors. Send a resume, the cover letter and contact information for 3 references to: Dr. Holly Haefele (hollyh@fossilrim.org) or Dr. Jane Packard (j-packard@tamu.edu). Application deadlines: January 30, 2013 (spring/summer internship) and July 1, 2013 (fall internship).
