Zoo Director Retires After More Than 20 Years of Service

Jan 18, 2012

Potter Park Zoo is proud to send off Gerry Brady into retirement after more than 20 years of service.

“We are grateful for Gerry’s tenure here,” says Willis Bennett, Director of Ingham County Parks. “He has overseen Potter Park Zoo through many phases, and we wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Gerry Brady came to Potter Park Zoo in May of 1989 as General Curator and became Director two years later. In his time at the zoo, he helped guide several exhibit expansions including the farmyard renovations in the early 1990s and the River Otter and Arctic Fox construction in 2005. Gerry was also involved with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan and held the position of Sumatran Tiger Coordinator for nearly 25 years. In 2010, Potter Park Zoo celebrated its 90th anniversary with the completion of a 20 year master plan under his direction.

In December 2011, the Ingham County Board of Commissioners approved the appointment of Sherrie Graham, Executive Director of the Potter Park Zoological Society, as the Interim Director of Potter Park Zoo.

“This is the next natural step for Potter Park Zoo,” Sherrie explains. “The zoo was fortunate to have Gerry see it through many transitions, and I am honored to be leading it through its next phase.”

Gerry is looking forward to spending more time with his eight grandkids who reside in mid-Michigan as well as visiting friends and family in Colorado. He plans on staying connected to the zoo community in his retirement by visiting other zoos around North America.

Potter Park Zoo is located at 1301 S. Pennsylvania Ave. within Potter Park along the Red Cedar River in Lansing, Michigan. The zoo is open daily year-round, winter hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call (517) 483-4222 or visit www.potterparkzoo.org.
