Riverbanks Zoo Announces Baby Number TwoAug 23, 2011
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden now has a full house—of giraffes, that is—following the birth of calf number two on July 27.
The now four-week-old giraffe was the second born at Riverbanks in July (the other on July 11), bringing the Zoo’s herd to 8 members strong. There have been 6 giraffe births at Riverbanks since February 2009.
“In recent years, the Zoo’s mammal department has put a lot of effort into increasing the number of giraffes that reside at Riverbanks,” said John Davis, curator of mammals. “Now that we have a full house, we will refocus our attention on maintaining that large number here at the Zoo.”
The newest calf, named Calvin by his keepers, weighed 134 pounds at birth and is the second born to parents Charlie and Krissy. Their first, Vivian B., now resides at Peoria Zoo—an AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accredited zoo in Illinois.
Visitors to Riverbanks can now see Calvin daily – along with Lennard (the older calf) – in the Zoo’s African Savanna exhibit.
