On The Cover
Kalina, a female calf born 20 July at the Indianapolis Zoo, made history as the third calf born to Kubwa via artificial insemination (AI). The father was Jackson from the Pittsburg Zoo & PPG Aquarium. Kubwa’s first calf in 2000 was the first African elephant in the world successfully born through AI. Her second calf, a bull named Kedar, was born in 2005. Lively and inquisitive, Kalina is already a favorite with staff and the public, who helped to name her through an online voting contest. She is the fifth elephant calf born at the Zoo since 2000.
