The Zoo Instructor (Sr Recreation Leader-Zoo Education) is a full-time position at Happy Hollow Park and Zoo. Happy Hollow Park & Zoo is owned and operated by the City of San Jose. This position is responsible for coordinating one or two of Happy Hollow’s education programs such as our group outreach programs, early childhood classes, sleepover programs, onsite classes, birthday parties, animal shows, puppet themed classes and scout patch programs, which includes driving the zoo van, managing supplies, animal handling, training and care, processing registrations and curriculum writing. This position also teaches these programs as well as other on-site classes and camps, supervises volunteers, works at special events, and interacts with the public and zoo volunteers answering questions and providing support, information and direction as needed to maintain positive public relations. The incumbent must be able to perform animal shows or puppet shows while maintaining the interest and focus of 40-300 students for over an hour all while maintaining student and animal safety. The incumbent will handle a variety of animal species for presentations and will perform animal training and care of animals such as porcupines, hawks, large snakes, tarantulas and parrots. The incumbent will perform program registration duties, handle customer service calls, perform limited facility maintenance work, assist in implementing park projects, and participate in the continued development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of education curriculum programming. Additional duties include performing general office duties such as scheduling programs, developing flyers, report writing, and cash handling while providing excellent customer service. This position regularly works weekends, evenings, and holidays, during all climatic conditions as assigned. Incumbents will be required to obtain and maintain certification in adult and child First Aid and /CPR and be ready to administer First Aid and CPR if needed.
