The Houston Zoo is looking for a Building & Grounds Supervisor. This position supervises Grounds and Housekeeping team members, ensuring that the conditions of all facilities, grounds and restrooms are organized, clean and orderly. The Grounds and Housekeeping department’s duties include mowing, trash removal, recycling, special events setup, general cleaning and restroom cleanliness. Promote excellent environmental services, provide facilities upkeep, and ensure the highest degree of cleanliness. This position leads a team of housekeepers and groundskeepers and sets the expectations and planning for the department. He or she works along-side team members on a daily basis to ensure quality.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Supervises, coordinates, and monitors work schedules/assignments of grounds and housekeeping crews

 Supervises crews engaged in the daily performance of grounds maintenance and janitorial maintenance

 Compiles, prepares and submits required reports

 Inspects quality of work performed by crews and contractors in area of responsibility and prepares reports concerning the work

 Interviews and selects employees and conducts performance reviews

 Trains workers in work procedures and requirements

 Handles employee relations issues and communicates with management

 Manages multiple projects at one time and must prioritize appropriately

 Communicates with other departments on work plans

 Ensures world class service is being delivered to Zoo guests

 Establishes work standards and procedures and evaluates results

 Investigates and responds to guest complaints

 Orders supplies, parts, chemicals and other materials

 Maintains various records and reports to monitor and track work activities

 Responsible for completing all work orders in a timely fashion

 Responsible for making sure all employees are in proper Zoo uniform with name tags on

 Instill into the teams the importance of a great guest experience

 Handle all staff complaints in a timely manner

 Works closely with the Special Events staff to ensure all events are a success

 Ensures all staff have received proper Spartan chemical training

 Ensures appropriate use of equipment and PPE

 Provides performance feedback to staff and development advice

 Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

Candidates for this position possess previous leadership experience or a similar operational background. Experience leading diverse groups of people is essential. Basic to advanced computer skills are required with an excellent history of strong verbal and written communication skills.

KNOWLEDGE:

High School diploma or GED is required. College degree is preferred. Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc. are required. Bilingual is a plus. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and comply with Zoo policy on driving.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

The position involves standing for long periods of time. It may also involve considerable physical exertion, such as extensive walking, bending, stooping and regular lifting of heavy objects 80 pounds on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position requires employees to work outdoors a majority of the time in all types of weather. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances.

PUBLIC CONTACT:

Requires attention to detail and a concern for public comfort through providing a clean and pleasant environment for both Zoo guests and staff. Heavy public contact is required, involving considerable interpersonal skills, extensive interaction with guests, members, donors and the media. A high level of Guest service and interaction with the general public is necessary.
