The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking an enthusiastic professional to join our Sea Lion Team. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of an evolving and maturing marine mammal program. The Sea Lion trainer position is a part-time, year-round position and includes responsibility for the care, husbandry, and training of the zoo’s California Sea Lions and Harbor seal.
Responsibilities: Daily duties involve interacting positively with Zoo guests and staff, prepare diets, monitor water quality, and maintain animal holding quarters and public spaces as well as weekly scuba diving for exhibit maintenance. Position will also be an integral part of expansion of all current sea lion programs. Peak season duties involve the presentation of scheduled daily shows, assist with Junior Sea Lion Trainer program and lead behind the scenes tours and special event animal interactions. This position will also assist in the supervision of seasonal Trainers and Show Hosts.
Qualifications: Four year college degree preferred with preference given to applicants who have at least 1 year previous experience with animals, (ideally with pinnipeds), formal animal presentations and a high level of guest service. Must be an effective communicator, able to work in a team environment, good observation and record keeping skills regarding animal well-being, willing to work in all weather conditions and available on weekends and holidays. Knowledge of operant conditioning as it pertains to animal training is required. Physical requirements include SCUBA certification or ability to become certified, able to lift 50 lbs, and ability to walk on uneven surfaces for exhibit maintenance. All successful candidates for this position will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.
