Animal Care Associate

The Animal Care Associate will maintain the highest standard of care and well-being of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center’s (SLNSC) exhibit and program collection of native New Hampshire wildlife. This keeper position is under the direct supervision of the Animal Care Manager and serves in conjunction with a second Animal Care Associate as part of the Education Team. Formal training is required for this position, which will be conducted by the Animal Care Manager. SLNSC is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and adheres to its established standards.

Specific responsibilities include:

•prepare diet and feed animals daily

•water animals and maintain pools daily

•clean cages and enclosures daily

•observe animals to detect illness/injury and report to Animal Care Manager

•periodically treat and administer medications under the direction of Animal Care Manager and cooperating veterinarians

•maintain close relationships with cooperating veterinary staff

•perform general maintenance tasks in the animal room and exhibit shift areas

•interact with animal care volunteers

•adhere to all policies, particularly relative to live animals

•share coverage of weekends and holidays with other Animal Care staff

•take sole responsibility for animal care on designated weekend/holiday shifts

•participate in enrichment (including training) program

•effectively communicate with other staff members

•maintain accurate records

•undergo weapons handling and training

•demonstrate committed attention to detail, particularly in the area of safety and security of personnel and the live animal collection

Specific qualifications include:

•zoology or related degree with animal care experience

•ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds

•ability to work outside in all weather conditions

Compensation: hourly rate commensurate with experience in the range of $11-13/hour plus benefits package with health insurance coverage, retirement plan, and flexible spending account options; paid time off benefits including sick days, vacation and holidays
