Gardeners at the Oregon Zoo perform and coordinate zoo horticulture and gardening duties and are responsible for designated geographic zone area functions. This is a working professional with responsibility for installation and repair of complex irrigation systems, animal waste recycling, animal browse programs, herbicide/pesticide applications and organic weed and pest control management, safety and emergency services, and general gardening duties. Assists the Senior Gardener and other staff in horticulture planning, projects, construction, maintenance and other functions. May act as lead over volunteers, community service workers, interns, temporary employees and newly hired Gardeners. Lead direction is received from the Senior Gardener. Overall supervision is received from the Horticulture Supervisor.
Associate’s degree or post secondary equivalent and three years progressively responsible professional horticulture and gardening experience; or any combination of experience and education that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and ability to perform assigned tasks. Upon hire, possession and the ability to maintain a valid driver's license. Ability to obtain and maintain (within six months of hire) an Oregon Pesticide Applicator License and First Aid/CPR Certification.
