Lion Country Safari, 2003 Lion Country Safari Rd, Loxahatchee, FL 33470, is seeking a highly motivated, innovative and team oriented person to be part of the Wildlife Team in the full time position of Animal Trainer I. This position works within a team responsible for the daily care of the program animal collection. Trainer will be responsible for presenting daily shows to the public in the animal theater as well as out in the park. This includes speaking roles as well as being able to handle animals for the public both during the shows and for informal animal encounters around the park.

Key Responsibilities:

All aspects of daily animal care and maintenance including cleaning, feeding, observation, enclosure upkeep, enrichment, monitoring of health and record keeping.

Handling of mammals, avian and reptilian species for educational purposes and maintaining existing behaviors.

Participate in educational shows and programs

Assist management staff in the development of presentations.

Work with keepers for the maintenance and training of animal behaviors to meet the goals/objectives of the area and animal needs.

Assist in capture, restraint and veterinarian procedures and medication deliveries.

Any Additional responsibilities deemed necessary by Lion Country Safari

Minimum Qualifications:

Four year degree in biology or related field

One year experience handling and training a variety of taxa, preference will be given to an applicant that has paid experience at an AZA institution

Knowledge and understanding of operant conditioning principles and techniques.

Possess knowledge of animal husbandry procedures

Must have excellent public speaking skills and the ability to deliver educational presentations, animal encounters, tours, and media requests. Must also be comfortable speaking on a microphone.

Must be able to communicate clearly & professionally and conduct themselves in a positive manner with co-workers and visitors of Lion Country Safari

Strong attention to detail and problem solving skills

Must be able to work well on an individual basis and as a team.

Must be able to work well under direction and have the capacity to absorb feedback.

Working holidays, weekends and overtime will be required.

Ability to lift 50lbs and capable of meeting the physical demands of the position, including working in a hot, humid climate.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Valid Driver’s License and ability to obtain a Florida State drivers license.
