This position is located in the Wildlife Sciences department at Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park (NZP). The employee oversees general hospital operations and technical support staff, provides medical and diagnostic care to the animal collection, conducts biomedical and conservation research, and leads training programs.

Key Requirements

Major Duties

• Supervises a staff of eight to ten employees, including Medical Technologists, Veterinary Technicians and other specialists such as research assistants and volunteers.

• Oversees the functioning of the clinical pathology laboratory which analyzes specimens from the livinge collection and necropsy animals from the National Zoo.

• Oversees the clinical veterinary hospital, including the pharmacy, animal care and medical treatments, and quarantine.

• Monitors and maintains the hospital and laboratory maintenance, including: inventory and ordering of supplies; equipment maintenance (renewing service contracts and warranties); and maintaining protocols and records of laboratory procedures.

• Coordinates programs involving technician training, medical and pathology record keeping, public education and support services in support of program goals.

1. Ability to maintain inventory and equipment for fully-functional veterinary hospital, pharmacy and diagnostic laboratory.

2. Ability to perform clinical veterinary technical duties in a zoological setting.

3. Ability to maintain a clinical pathology laboratory, including performing diagnostic tests.

4. Ability to perform as a supervisor, including coordinating scheduling and continuing education requirements, and providing performance reviews.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Qualifications

You must meet the Basic Education Requirement:

Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

In addition to Basic Requirement above, you must have following:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as managing and overseeing veterinary technology and medical technology staff who are responsible for providing direct animal care, and assisting with animal health diagnostics, examinations, anesthetic procedures, treatments, and diagnostic modalities including the functioning of the Clinical Pathology Laboratory.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
