AREA MANAGER – REPTILE/AMPHIBIAN & NATIVE SPECIES - (FULL-TIME)

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is looking for a qualified individual to fill the position of Area Manager. The Area Manager will be responsible for overseeing the health and best husbandry practices of all animals within the areas, maintaining accurate records, overseeing exhibit maintenance, developing action plans, attending regular medical and operational meetings, performing keeper work as needed, supporting the guest experience, developing and maintaining area SOP’s, and assisting with construction projects. Other duties will include being trained as a member of the Animal Recapture Team, serving as the liaison for the Collection Managers and Curators as to daily concerns of the department, supervising, training, motivating, mentoring, and educating keepers as well as coordinating all activities of the keeper staff. This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position and requires that the person remain on call 24 hours/day, 7 days/week to respond to emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Animal Science or other related field or equivalent experience; At least one year supervisory experience; Demonstrated supervisory ability as well as ability to lead and mentor professional staff; Three years paid experience with an AZA accredited zoological institution (preferred); Previous experience with a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians; Must Possess a valid driver’s license; Must be able to stand and remain active for an eight hour shift; Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events; Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including telephone, two way radios, motor vehicles, electric golf carts, hand tools, animal restraint and capture equipment, firearms, gardening/carpentry tools, power equipment (e.g. leaf blower, weed eater, lawn mower, or power washer), computer equipment, scales, transponder reader, digital thermometers and water chemistry equipment; Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed; Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions; Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry, or otherwise move objects; and, Must be able to operate a variety of equipment including two-way radio, computer, telephone, golf cart, etc., and exposure to potential environmental hazards such as poison oak/ivy, uneven terrain, and insect bites/stings, zoonotic diseases and risk of animal attack possible.
