Camp Zoofari teachers are responsible for implementing a fun and exciting recreational and educational summer program for children ages 4-12. The programs will be based on topics relating to natural sciences (zoology, ecology, conservation and animal husbandry) with the purpose of igniting in all people a passion for learning and conservation.
This is a seasonal position of 25-40 hours per week. Camp Zoofari runs June 2nd – August 8th (excluding weekends and July 4th day) and serves 240 campers per week. Campers are divided into age groups (4-5, 6-7, 8-9, and 10-12), and each group has one lead teacher and up to two non-lead teachers in addition to teen volunteers. The teacher to student ration is 1:10. This position requires a high level of energy and enthusiasm, creativity, flexibility, and the ability to work with groups of all ages in both in and outdoor settings.

Working knowledge of the English language with excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
Must be able to walk and stand for long periods of time in extreme weather conditions.
Minimum commitment of 4 weeks (consecutive or non-consecutive) from June 2nd – August 8th required. One of the weeks worked must be either June 2nd-6th or August 4th-8th. There is no camp on July 4th.

o 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., OR 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. all Monday – Friday
Attendance at camp training required.
o 5-9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21st AND Thursday, May 22nd
Completion of at least two years college coursework in pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Zoology, Biology, or related field required.
Classroom educator of two years or related experience with children required (can include experience in informal setting such as tutoring, camp, etc.).
Experience working with live animals desired; however, animal handling is not a function of this position.
Preference for lead teacher positions will be given to returning camp teachers, followed by certified teachers.
Candidates should be enthusiastic, creative, and self-motivated. This position requires considerable flexibility and patience. Candidates must also be able to work well both independently and cooperatively in a positive, team-oriented environment (which could include lead and non-lead teachers, teen volunteers, interns, and full-time staff).
o Assist with preparation and break-down of facilities and materials used in camp programs.
o Teach and conduct all lessons and activities as written in the curriculum, as well as monitoring camper drop-off and pick-up.
o Engage in creative, age-appropriate, and responsibly managed activities with campers.
o Direct, supervise, and evaluate Zoo Crew (teen) volunteers involved in Camp Zoofari.
o Assist in the evaluation of camp programs for age appropriateness, effectiveness, appropriateness of curriculum for program length, use of multiple learning styles and intelligences in activities, and action based content while seeking input and review from peers.
o Inform Camp Zoofari supervisor on duty if any emergencies arise.
o Interact in a positive and educational way with all Zoo guests including campers, parents and siblings of campers, and general Zoo guests.
o Abide by all Houston Zoo policies and procedures, including safety protocol and wearing the appropriate Zoo uniform.
o Complete online Abuse Prevention Training by first date of camp training.
o Other duties as assigned.
Exposure to outdoor conditions such as heat, humidity, and rain will be required.
This position reports directly to the Camp and Overnight Programs Supervisor.
Non-lead teachers will receive $12 per hour.
All lead and non-lead teachers scheduled to work the week of August 4th-8th are eligible to receive a $100 bonus at the conclusion of the camp season. Receipt of bonus is dependent upon completion of all scheduled hours during that week per the finalized schedule; teachers missing all or partial days for any reason during this time frame are ineligible to receive the bonus. Please note staff scheduling for the week of August 4th-8th is subject to availability and is not guaranteed.
