Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden is an accredited zoological facility seeking applicants for the position of staff veterinarian. The successful applicant will be responsible to administer a program of preventive care, quarantine protocol, postmortem examinations, and treatment of sick animals; advises on nutrition, husbandry, animal welfare, pest control and zoonotic disease prevention. This position maintains excellent medical records and remains compliant in all relevant regulatory agencies. The zoo has a diverse collection of approximately 500 animals. Additional responsibilities are to oversee the administration of the veterinary department which will include the supervision of support staff, purchasing of hospital supplies, equipment, and the maintenance of equipment and facilities. This position also maintains the veterinary medical budget, supports conservation initiatives and is part of the zoo’s management team. The zoo’s veterinary hospital and quarantine facility are well equipped and recently updated. On call 24 hours a day 7 days a week, but local relief vets are available for vacation coverage. This position reports to the zoo director.
Qualifications: Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited university with at least one year of experience within a zoological institution, postgraduate training in zoological medicine, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skill and abilities. Must possess a valid Indiana State Veterinary License by time of appointment, valid Driver’s License and must obtain valid DEA license. Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment, be able to meet the physical demands of this position and be able to work in all weather conditions.
