The NC Zoo's Horticulture Division is looking for an Interior Horticulture Natural Science Curator I to direct the management of the NC Zoo’s Interior plant collections as the Zoo’s authority on tropical, desert, aquatic and native plants in interior landscapes and production areas. This entails the planning, development, and implementation of programs to acquire, document, preserve, research and conserve plants as collections both physical and conceptual. This position is currently responsible for an interior collection consisting of 1160 taxa and 8332 individual plants including tropical and interior grown native trees, shrubs, vines, succulents and herbaceous plants, also consists of nursery and greenhouse plants that are held until needed for planting. This includes a production area of 8,880 square feet of greenhouse space for tropical plants, arid plants, aquatics, native and rare plants, 17,500 square feet of nursery space and 555 square feet of outside aquatic plant production space. This position oversees the care of three rare collections significant for their value as known provenance collections – the legally wild collected Sonora Desert cacti collection, the West African lowland tropical rain forest collection obtained through seed collected by Limbe Botanic Garden staff in Cameroon, Africa and the East African partnership species collected by the Tooro Botanical Gardens in Uganda. The Zoo’s plant collections are one of the essential elements of the Zoo’s purpose to save, understand and interpret the world’s natural resources. The Zoo has one of the most diverse plant collections in the Southeast and is a recognized botanical resource. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:Qualified applicants must meet the Education and Experience Requirements and possess the following:• Demonstrated experience managing diverse plant collections with wide ranges of plant species and vegetation communities represented to include tropical, desert, aquatic and/or native plant landscapes. • Technical knowledge of the skills and maintenance practices necessary to cultivate rare plant collections such as watering procedures, Integrated Pest Management, pruning and fertilization. • Must have knowledge of the natural habitats represented within the zoo as well as knowledge of exhibit design based on horticultural and/or animal needs. • Must have the physical ability to manage the Zoo's interior horticultural landscapes and exhibits. • Must be able to acquire a North Carolina Pesticide applicators license and must be able to participate in the NC Zoo Occupational Health Program immediately upon employment.**To receive credit for your work history and credentials, you must provide the information on the application form.
