All newly hired animal care staff and educators with responsibility for regularly caring for collection animals are REQUIRED to complete and pass (4) on-line prerequisite classes prior to reporting to their department. Human Resources will schedule this training as part of the on-boarding program. For current employees transferring into an animal care department, these classes MUST be completed and passed prior to the transfer.

Pre-requisite courses include:

•Zoonotic Disease Prevention and Bio-Security

•Working Safely With Dangerous Animals

•Government Regulations and Compliance (USDA/OSHA)

•The Fundamentals of Animal Learning

**Passing grade for classes is 90

Interested applicants must be available any of the seven days of the week. Scheduled hours will be approximately 40 per week. Representative duties of this position includes the ability of the Lead Keeper to assign, supervise and participate in the work of Mammal personnel responsible for the animals and facilities in the assigned area; schedules the work of the keepers; participates in training and evaluates the work performance of keepers and have the ability to monitor sounds and two-way radio traffic. The Lead Keeper also makes daily inspections of the animals and facilities in assigned area; and directs all activities that affect the keepers and area.

Desirable qualifications for this position include a minimum of 5 years experience as a Keeper or Senior Keeper in a Zoological institution, the general knowledge of training and experience in animal husbandry, animal behavior, care, feeding and handling of exotic animals, safety practices around wild animals, biology/zoology, techniques for restraining and capturing wild animals and principles of supervision and training. Proven leadership abilities/skills, excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills are required.

California drivers license is required. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to apply.

One of the essential functions of this position is the ability to drive a SDZ Global vehicle. If you are offered employment in this position, you will be asked to authorize SDZ Global to access your current driving report through the DMV’s Employer Pull Notice Program. Your hiring for this position will be contingent on SDZ Global receiving an acceptable driving report from you. In addition, your continued employment in the position will depend on you maintaining an acceptable driving record.
