Zoo Keeper I

Rate: $10.75/hr.

Examination is announced to establish an employment list to fill 1 vacancy in the Zoo department and future vacancies as they occur.

Minimum Qualifications for Admission to Examination:

High School diploma or GED; previous experience with the care of animals preferably in a paid environment or with a veterinarian; or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.

Kind of Work

Zoo keeper is responsible for daily care of zoo/exotic animals. Duties include preparing diets, feeding animals in assigned area, cleaning exhibits, minor repairs in exhibits, grounds maintenance in and around exhibits, supplying enrichment to assigned animals, operant conditioning, interaction with visitors, assist with animal programs for education classes, assist with set-up and work during special events, and assist with general daily running of the facility. The Alexandria Zoo is a small AZA facility that utilizes strong independent individuals to work in a family type setting. Kind of Examination

This examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, a performance test or any combination thereof deemed necessary to adequately screen and rank applicants. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, place, and date of assembled testing, if used. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their previous training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. The information is subject to verification.

Must include copies of driver’s license, diploma, GED, DD214, degree, etc. with application.
