The Gladys Porter Zoo is seeking a Curator to work with and oversee a large, diverse collection of mammals. This is a “hands on” management position, involving participation in collection and exhibit planning, daily animal husbandry, staff training and development, and conservation planning. The Curator of Mammals will work with the education, conservation, veterinary and facilities supervisors as well as the Zoo’s registrar. He or she will also interact with professional colleagues on acquisitions and dispositions, Species Survival Plans and Regional Collection Plans.

Individual responsibilities include:

• Researching and developing husbandry and nutrition protocols for new species and the existing mammals collection

• Leading by example: Recruits, trains and works alongside subordinates

• Compiling information, keeping records and responding to surveys

• Working with international, federal and state agencies on permits for import and export

• Cooperating with/assisting all Zoo staff members to further the mission and goals of the Gladys Porter Zoo

The successful candidate must have extensive large animal husbandry experience; a strong background in large ungulates and primates is preferred. A degree in wildlife management or a related biological science, five years working hands-on with large mammals in a comprehensive collection setting, and three years’ experience in a supervisory capacity is desired. Additional years of working experience may be substituted for the degree requirement. He or she must have a working knowledge of operant conditioning, large animal transport, and excellent communication skills. While the ability to speak Spanish is a plus, a willingness to work in a unique culture is a requirement.

Physical requirements include the ability to lift 50 pounds, an ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions, and the ability to climb, bend and ambulate quickly.

Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience and proven abilities.
