The Aviculturist is responsible for performing all aspects of avian husbandry without direct supervision. These duties include: maintenance of avian exhibits and holding areas, diet preparation and feeding, avian medical treatments, participation in public feeding programs, recordkeeping, training and supervision of volunteers, and avian rehabilitation.

Essential Functions

•Responsible for maintenance and care of avian exhibits and holding areas, including plants, fish and invertebrates as needed.

•Assist in the veterinary care and clinical treatment of birds.

•Diet preparation, animal feeding, live prey care.

•Respond to visitors' questions and concerns.

•Provide rehabilitation care for native birds as needed.

•Train and supervise volunteers


•Animal training following departmental and aquarium guidelines

•Present live animal programs, on microphone

•Other aquarium duties/projects as is required related to job function

Required Knowledge/Experience

•Bachelor degree in Biology preferred or equivalent experience.

•Two year's experience in public Aquarium or Zoo working with birds or comparable avian rehabilitation experience preferred.

•Experience with avian medical care.

•Working knowledge of basic avian anatomy and husbandry.

•Good public speaking skills

•Animal training experience using positive reinforcement, preferably with birds

•Ability to work in a team environment and communicate with diverse groups of MBA employees and volunteers.

•Valid California drivers' license with an insurable driving record.

•Basic computer skills, proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Desirable Knowledge/Experience

•Knowledge of shorebird and seabird natural history

•Knowledge of California fauna.

•Experience with avian rehabilitation.

•Incubation and hand rearing
