ASSISTANT CURATOR Basic Purpose and Responsibility:The Assistant Curator is responsible for assisting the General Curator in coordinating the daily operations of the animal department including the overall care of the animal collection, the functional efficiency of the department and supervision of the staff.Essential Functions*:Primary accountability for:• Management of aquatic life support systems: maintain operational parameters, troubleshoot problems, develop and implement corrective actions, and provide routine maintenance. • Establishing and managing a volunteer dive program.• Training Zoo staff on all emergency protocols, scheduling safety drills, leading the Emergency Response Team, and maintaining inventory of emergency and personal protective equipment.• Maintaining safety equipment and overseeing programs intended to ensure the utilization of proper zoo safety standards. • Maintaining the proper inventory and quantity of materials, supplies, equipment and foodstuffs essential to the efficient operation of the department.• Overseeing Zoo wide pest control program: maintain records and coordinate with contract Certified Pest Control Operator. • Overseeing the inventory, storage, and dispensing protocol for antivenin.• Overseeing the development, organization, and function of the Zoo technical library.• Developing and monitoring internship programs with colleges and universities.*The list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented or changed as necessary.Assists the General Curator in:• Managing the daily and weekly work activities of the Animal Care Department including assisting in the selection and training of personnel, the resolution of performance issues, and the reviewing and evaluation of personnel performance.• Reviewing daily keeper record reports in order to assess, respond to and correct animal maintenance issues and potential hazards for staff.• Establishing a departmental budget and accounts for all expenditures according to policy standards. • Maintaining and developing the animal collection through involvement in the purchase, trade, or negotiation of breeding loans.• Serves as Acting General Curator during designated periods.The Assistant Curator shall:• Keeps abreast of current field informational resources and recommend changes that may enhance departmental goals. • Attend senior staff meetings, animal management meetings, Board of Directors meetings and other in-house and association meetings. • Support other Zoo departments by providing data and assistance with major organizational projects. • Collect and correlate data relative to departmental operations and provides necessary information to Registrar for various reports and administrative documentation. • Participate with the AZA and other institutions in the development and study of research projects as directed by the General Curator. • Perform other duties as required by the General Curator. Position Qualifications:To perform at a proficient level and be fully qualified, a person would be expected to have:Education (Minimum Needed):• Four year degree in one of the natural sciences or closely related field.• Advanced formal or independent work in the fields directly related to exotic animal husbandry, display, research, etc. Experience (Minimum Needed):• Leadership experience at an accredited AZA institution.• Diversified experience in the husbandry and management of an exotic animal collection. Special Skills:• Familiarity with design and operation of freshwater and salt-water aquatic life support systems for a variety of taxa including marine and aquatic mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.• Possess a strong working knowledge of closed loop filtration systems, motors, and water chemistry.• Familiarity with the equipment and operation of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration systems.• Familiarity with environmental control software and operational parameters (Metasys) • Certified SCUBA diver. Master diver or ability to become a master diver preferred.• Experience with physical restraint equipment, vehicles and related maintenance equipment.• Working knowledge of personal computers and software applications.Other:• Assistant Curator will be on 24-hour call. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.• Must have a valid NYS driver’s license, or ability to get one, and have an average or better driving record based on the evaluation process of our insurance company. This full time position provides health, dental, life insurance, 403B retirement plan, 5 weeks paid leave time, 6 sick days, and 8 holidays as benefits. Salary range $45,000 - $50,000.
