The San Francisco Zoo is hiring a Wellness Researcher & Editorial Coordinator to join an experienced staff committed to best practices and the highest quality of animal care for our animal collection in excess of over 1100 animals. This is a Regular Full Time position, working between 30-40 hours per week. Hours and days of the week can be flexible. May occasionally work evenings and weekends.SUMMARY: The Coordinator will support the VP of Wellness & Animal Behavior with their research and editorial duties in developing the San Francisco Zoo's innovative "Wellness Initiative", which elevates the visibility and the priority of zoo animal welfare, by facilitating applied studies at the zoo, and reporting the findings in scholarly publications and at national and international meetings.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.Research Duties - approximately 60%Responsible for data collection, data management, and data tabulation, including monthly summaries, for assigned research. This includes the observation of animals in animal areas.Assists in the development of ideas for new behavioral protocols and computerized data management systems.Tabulates data for research reports and presentations at professional meetings and in scientific publications. Writes summaries for Animal Programs staff.Assists in data analyses, coordinates research interns and performs literature searches.Editorial Duties - approximately 40%Maintains manuscript files and online database.Processes new manuscript submissions. Creates hard copy files and identifies reviewers.Prepares correspondence/corresponds with Reviewers. Sends invitations, review materials, and reminders.Prepares Table of Contents and Forthcoming for each printed issue of Zoo Biology.Additional Responsibilities1. Interacts with Zoo staff and animal husbandry personnel in a professional and courteous manner.2. Interacts with Zoo visitors courteously and offer proper attention at all times.3. Equivalent coursework accepted as substitute. Experience in animal behavior research is strongly preferred.EDUCATION, TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate will possess an Associate's Degree in Biology or other relevant field or equivalent combination of training and/or experience. A Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred. Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook and Excel is required. Proficiency with Microsoft Access preferred. Typing skills are a plus. The right candidate must be able to master electronic equipment and technical information. Strong written and oral communication skills and strong follow-up, follow through skills are a must. Solid interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others is a requirement.
