San Diego Zoo Global has an opening for a Registered Veterinary Technician. Our veterinary staff consisting of 6 veterinarians, a veterinary resident, 6 registered veterinary technicians, a nutritionist, and 6 hospital keepers is responsible for the care of over 4000 mammals, birds and reptiles.
This position will be based at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. There may be occasional requirements to work at our sister organization, the San Diego Zoo.
Job responsibilities include assisting staff veterinarians in animal procedures and treatments by setting up equipment, preparing and restraining animal patients, inducing and maintaining anesthesia, placing catheters and monitoring fluid administration, preparing and administering injections and other medications, providing instruments and equipment, collecting measurements and samples, maintaining medical records; performing laboratory analysis of biological samples, exposing and processing diagnostic radiographs; equipment maintenance; providing nursing care including bandaging, applying splints, emergency first aid, neonate health assessment, and dental prophylaxis; maintaining drug and medical supply inventory; maintaining serum and plasma banks; participating in pursuing, immobilizing and transporting animals; setting up medical supplies and equipment for mobile operations, and coordinating treatment protocols and preventative medicine programs as assigned. The successful applicant must have the education, training and experience which provide background, knowledge, and proficiency in the areas outlined above.
Additional essential qualifications include ability to monitor sounds and communicated via two way radio, ability to work as a member of a team, excellent people skills, the ability to get along with a wide variety of personalities, organizational skills, a high degree of independence and attention to detail, the ability to multi-task, and the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Verbal and written communication skills are a must. Must have a valid California Driver license. Applicant must be at least 18 years of age. Applicants must be available any of the (7) days a week. Hours scheduled will be approximately 40 hrs/week.
Possession of, or eligibility to obtain a valid Registered Veterinary Technician registration issued by the state of California is required at the time of hiring. If a current California registration is not in your possession, it must be obtained within 1 year from the date of hire.
All newly hired animal care staff and educators with responsibility for regularly caring for collection animals are REQUIRED to complete and pass (4) on-line prerequisite classes prior to reporting to their department. Human Resources will schedule this training as part of the on-boarding program. For current employees transferring into an animal care department, these classes MUST be completed and passed prior to the transfer.
Pre-requisite courses include:
•Zoonotic Disease Prevention and Bio-Security
•Working Safely With Dangerous Animals
•Government Regulations and Compliance (USDA/OSHA)
•The Fundamentals of Animal Learning
**Passing grade for classes is 90%
One of the essential functions of this position is the ability to drive a SDZ Global vehicle. If you are offered employment in this position, you will be asked to authorize SDZ Global to access your current driving report through the DMV’s Employer Pull Notice Program. Your hiring for this position will be contingent on SDZ Global receiving an acceptable driving report from you. In addition, your continued employment in the position will depend on you maintaining an acceptable driving record.
