Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Education and Science Department, seeks a Research Associate to assist in investigating issues related to animal welfare. The successful candidate will have conducted animal welfare research in a non-wild setting and will be familiar with issues related to the science of animal welfare. The successful candidate will work with the Research Manager and the Education and Science Team, and will assist in conducting animal behavior research, researching animal-welfare related issues, supporting animal-welfare related initiatives, and will engage park guests about our animal science programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Assist in animal welfare-related tasks, such as researching literature on issues related to animal welfare, generating reports related to animal welfare, and assisting in animal-welfare related initiatives.
•Assist in animal behavior research on collection animals (data observation and collection, behavioral scoring from video, behavioral data analysis, and data management).
•Engage with park guests about our animal behavior research
This is a one-year contract appointment through New College beginning in January, 2014 with potential renewal for one year.
Masters degree in biology, zoology or related field
Experience conducting behavioral and welfare research on animals in a non-wild setting
Excellent written and oral communication skills for both formal and informal audiences
Strong analytical skills
Ability to work with others in a fast paced, team oriented atmosphere
Experience working in a zoo or aquarium
Knowledge of statistical software or other technical skills related to animal behavior research
