Salary: $52,623 - $70,468 annually

The Education Specialist in this position performs various activities to provide educational programs for middle and high school students about environmental sustainability with an emphasis on waste prevention, composting and household toxics reduction, and climate change. This includes developing, coordinating and conducting classroom presentations; leading the work of part-time education assistants; and developing concepts and overseeing the work of outside contractors that provide educational programming to schools on behalf of Metro. This position works with school administrators, teachers, students, colleagues in the Oregon Zoo’s Conservation Education program, outside contractors and local government educators to facilitate the delivery of education programs and presentations. Supervision is received from the Education and Outreach Manager in the Resource Conservation & Recycling division of Metro’s Sustainability Center.

Preferred qualifications for this position include three years teaching experience in formal and non-formal settings with 6th-12th-grade students, two years project or program management and demonstrable experience in program or project evaluation.

Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in education, environmental education or related field and three years of experience conducting presentations for formal and/or non-formal education audiences; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job. Preferred qualifications include three years formal and non-formal teaching experience with grades 6-12, two years project or program coordination experience and demonstrable experience in program or project evaluation.
