Interns are an integral part of the NC Aquarium’s Husbandry team. Interns will work with the Aquarium Husbandry staff to maintain a diverse collection of fish, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, and plants for public display at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. Interns will learn to maintain water quality and care for the live collection. Interns will also learn the operations of major salt and freshwater aquarium systems. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, testing water, preparing food, feeding animals, cleaning filters and tanks, making saltwater, watering planted areas, learning to observe animals for signs of stress and disease, and operating major aquarium systems including quarantine, holding and display tanks. Additional responsibilities and projects will be assigned by the Husbandry Curator, Aquarists, and Horticulturist.
Applicants should interact positively with the general public, children, co-workers, and volunteers. Candidates should be rising juniors or seniors majoring in Biology, Zoology, Botany, Marine Sciences, or other fields related to the Natural Sciences. A flexible schedule and a valid driver’s license are required. Prior experience working with captive aquatic animals is preferred, but not required.
Duration: 10 week positions (start/end dates are flexible), 35-40 hours per week; evening, weekend, and holiday work required
