The Birmingham Zoo is currently seeking a full time keeper for the Children Zoo Department. Responsibilities include the daily inspection, feeding, cleaning, training, enrichment, handling, shifting, medicating and maintenance of the animals and their exhibits in the Children Zoo area. The Birmingham Children Zoo focuses on introducing children of all ages to domestic animals as well as native wildlife in interactive and educational exhibits.

Children Zoo Keepers will rotate shifts through the CZ Barn the Alabama Wilds areas. Keeper will be expected to interact and interpret with zoo visitors in the CZ area. Other duties may be assigned by the zoological manager or curator.

Candidates must possess good communication, observational, and organization skills and the ability to work well with others in a fast-paced team environment.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds and perform duties in extreme weather as needed.

Biology-related degree and/or professional animal care experience is preferred.

Prior animal training using operant conditioning and environmental animal enrichment preferred.

Horticulture knowledge is not required but is desired.

Candidates must have previous animal care experience and desire to continue working with native wildlife and/or domestic livestock.
