PR/Conservation: Conservation Communications Specialist

The mission of the Indianapolis Zoo is to empower people and communities, both locally and globally, to advance animal conservation. The Zoo’s Conservation Communication Specialist position plays an integral role in fulfilling that mission.

This fulltime position represents the Zoo’s public relations team as a powerful voice for conservation across all media including mainstream, online, print, broadcast and social networking. A gifted writer and communicator with a dedication to international animal conservation efforts, the Zoo seeks a candidate who will work closely with Zoo leadership, developing and implementing strategies and tactics that positively shape attitudes and perceptions about the Indianapolis Zoo and its conservation-focused programs.

The candidate will possess a minimum five (5) years experience in the public relations or journalism field, and is detail-oriented with exceptional writing and grammatical skills.

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Journalism, Communications or related field is required.

Additionally, it is recommended the Specialist have experience in photography, video and basic editing in both areas. Experience managing website content is also desired.

The successful candidate will have proven success in:

• Building and maintaining national, regional, and local relationships with the media;

• Measurably increasing media coverage;

• Researching and producing press releases, documents, and articles for placement in highly visible communications channels;

• Working within AP style and an organization’s written and graphic standard guidelines.

The Indianapolis Zoo is a one of the top tourist destinations in Indiana. Our animal exhibits, gardens, and aquariums delight more than 1 million visitors annually. The Zoo is a private, 501(c)3 institution.
