Penguin Exhibit Intern

Students will have a hands-on learning experience about caring for African Penguins. They will learn about diet preparation, feeding, enrichment, record keeping, natural history and behavior, animal restraint, cleaning operations and other factors affecting the care of the collection. In addition, we provide an opportunity to enhance public speaking skills and interview/resume building skills. Opportunities may be available to learn about other avian species in our collection that include shorebirds, waterfowl, songbirds, puffins, murres, guillemots and albatross.

Physical project assignments can include: kneeling, bending, squatting, climbing, scrubbing, sweeping, and wearing waders in 3ft high cold water.


·At least 18 years of age

·Current undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university.

·Must be a student during the term immediately preceding the internship

·Must submit a resume of courses and/or experience related to position applying

·Minimum cumulative grade point average

·3.0/4.0 for graduate students

Must provide a minimum of 2 letters of recommendation from college/university professors or faculty staff.

Desired Skills

Strong Interest in and awareness of Aviculture

Attention to detail.

Able to lift up to 35 pounds.

Ability to multi-task.

Research, writing, academic literature and organizational skills.

Interpersonal skills and proven ability to work effectively with colleagues.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PPT.

Proficiency with SharePoint a plus.

This position is an Unpaid Internship or STEM Internship (STEM may include funding provided through your educational institution)
