The Indianapolis Zoo is a national leader of animal conservation, and one of the top tourist destinations in Indiana. We’re located on a 64 acre campus in the heart of vibrant downtown Indianapolis. In addition to our animal exhibits, gardens, and aquarium, we support local and international animal conservation efforts. The Zoo is a private, 501(c)(3) operation.

Your passion for animal conservation, and your particular areas of interest and experience in venomous and non-venomous snakes, desert reptiles, and desert birds may qualify you for our full time Keeper position in Deserts.

A Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university in life sciences, zoo keeping, animal psychology or similar, related field is strongly preferred. High School/GED may be accepted provided the candidate has a minimum of ten (10) years of directly related work experience at an AZA accredited zoo or similar animal conservation institution.

The successful candidate must be highly motivated and, once trained, able to work independently with limited supervision. As part of a small, cohesive team, must also be able to function and make positive contributions as a team member. Must have proven decision making/problem solving skills, good observational skills. Must be temperamentally suited to working with animals. Must be safety oriented.

There are strenuous physical requirements of this position, including but not limited to:

• Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions.

• Ability to perform very heavy work, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.

• Ability to climb and maintain body equilibrium while performing various jobs.

• Excellent visual acuity and hearing required.

• Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens. Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.) Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines.

Experience and interest in working with animals is necessary. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, professional demeanor and professional appearance due to regular visitor contact, seasonal keeper chats, and media events.

Successfully passing pre-employment testing, including drug tests and criminal history checks is a condition of employment.
