Birmingham Zoo, Inc. is accepting applications for an un-paid 3 month internship in the Primate department. The position will be available September 15th through December 15th, and will include prosimians, monkeys, lesser apes, and great apes. Preferred applicants have completed, or are in the process of completing, a degree in animal husbandry, biology, or a related field and are at least 18 years of age. Interns will be working 30-40 hours a week, including weekends and possibly holidays. Knowledge of animal husbandry, enrichment, and operant condition is ideal, but not required. The preferred candidate would be able to work in adverse weather conditions (rain, snow, etc.). They will be able to lift at least 50 lbs., stand for long periods, and safely navigate through slippery and uneven terrain. Strong oral and written communication is important. Safety is paramount for guests, interns, staff, and collection animals. Therefore, the intern will be closely monitored by a staff member to ensure safety protocols are being followed at all times. The successful candidate will pass a drug test and background check and must provide documentation of a negative TB test in the past 10 months.

Valid driver’s license is necessary. Housing will be the responsibility of the intern.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

Assisting keepers with daily husbandry tasks

Animal observations

Observing training sessions

Providing enrichment to the collection animals

Performing keeper chats

Working after-hours events
